In September 2020, I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Initially, I did not require treatment, staying in the “watch and wait” period until May 2025. Under the care of the amazing people at Memorial Sloan Kettering, I entered a phase II clinical trial, allowing me to be treated without chemotherapy. I was administered zanubrutinib, obinutuzumab, and venetoclax over an 11-month period. I was able to achieve remission in the minimum time frame of the trial protocol that could have taken up to 24 months.
I attribute achieving remission in the minimum time frame due to the care and guidance of my team, the care and support of my family and friends, and my continued exercise and diet regimen during treatment.
I am now 10 months in remission with minimal lingering impacts of treatment (RBC and platelets a bit below normal range).
I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate in the trial. While at MSK, I got a true appreciation and realization of the impact various kinds of cancer have on people of all ages.
