What are myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs)?
Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are types of blood cancer that begin with an abnormal mutation (change) in a stem cell in the bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside the large bones of the body. The mutation leads to an overproduction of any combination of white cells, red cells, and platelets.
- “Myelo” refers to bone marrow
- “Proliferative” means to grow or reproduce quickly
- “Neoplasm” is an abnormal growth of cells
There are several types of MPNs. Each type affects different blood cells and has specific criteria for its diagnosis. Some MPNs are slow growing or “indolent”; others are more aggressive.
Knowing more about the different types of MPNs can help you feel more prepared when discussing options with your doctors.
