Blood Cancer United

A person wearing a light-colored sweater and a dark cap is holding a card with a childlike drawing of a rainbow, clouds, raindrops, and a sun. The card has bold text at the top that reads “FAITH. HOPE. & COURAGE.” and at the bottom it says “YOU ARE A CANCER WARRIOR!” followed by “JEREMIAH 17:14.” The background shows an indoor setting with ceiling lights.

I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) during my 67-year annual physical. No symptoms, still working my outdoor, fairly intense golf job. Blood levels were low for red cells, white cells, and platelets. After numerous blood tests, it was determined I needed a bone marrow biopsy. That yielded immediate AML diagnosis. For a person who had never been sick, run 50+ marathons, it was inconceivable to me. The AML treatment and journey continued for me for a year and a half. Although in remission, residual minimal disease is something to deal with. My support team and Knights of Columbus have developed a Cancer Warrior prayer card and bracelet, helping others keep their . . . Faith, Hope, and Courage. Never give in, and never give up!
