Despite facing significant challenges, Sarah embodies resilience and positivity in her journey as a pediatric cancer survivor. Diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of 8 and later at 27 with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that required a bone marrow transplant, Sarah’s story is one of strength, perseverance, and a commitment to giving back.
Sarah’s battle with cancer left her with side effects, including mobility challenges and cognitive deficits. However, she refuses to let these obstacles define her. Instead, Sarah focuses on maintaining a positive attitude and finding joy in life's small pleasures, particularly her beloved pet rabbit, Twist.
While her journey is marked by ups and downs, delayed diagnoses and misdiagnoses, multiple surgeries and lack of follow-up care, and an unsafe living situation, Sarah has found solace and community in unexpected places. Now residing in a disability-friendly apartment in a senior living complex, she has discovered a supportive environment among fellow residents who enjoy her positivity and share her understanding of life's challenges. Thanks to a new wheelchair, her change in environment, as well as adaptive sports, Sarah has newfound freedom and embraces life with renewed vigor.
Sarah is dedicated to giving back and supporting others. From attending cancer camps to her connections with organizations like Blood Cancer United, Roswell Park AYA group, Elephants and Tea, and CAC2, she finds purpose in helping fellow survivors navigate their paths. It is important for Sarah to help make others’ lives better. For Sarah, the power of a positive attitude and the importance of community are invaluable.
Sarah’s determination to overcome adversity shines through in her journey. She sees her scars as symbols of growth and transformation, likening them to feathers. Sarah believes she is now beginning to spread her wings and fly, and hopes to commemorate her journey with a feather tattoo one day.
Sarah's story inspires us all, reminding us that kindness, resilience, and a positive outlook can light the way forward, even in adversity.
