In early 2017 we found out my husband Miguel had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diffuse large B-cell. It was the most frightening and overwhelming time of our lives. To this day I am amazed at how we got through it.
Miguel had surgery, chemo, radiation, lumbar punctures and other treatments. Throughout it all, I was constantly amazed at his positive attitude and strength. I don't think I could have been as brave or strong as he was, if this happened to me. But, while he concentrated on his treatments, eating healthy, resting, or going for walks when he was up to it, I immersed myself into learning all I could about his diagnosis so we would know what to expect and what to look out for.
Advice that I can give as a caregiver is to listen to your oncology team and do not search for your diagnosis on the internet. Contact The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for additional information and support.
LLS is a blessing for blood cancer patients and families. Plus, you meet great people and make new friends who can relate to what you're going through.
Today, I am happy to say my husband is three years cancer free. Just remember - giving up is NOT an option!
