Blood Cancer United

Close-up portrait of a blood cancer patient lying in a hospital bed wearing a patterned hospital gown. The patient has a shaved head, likely related to cancer treatment, and looks directly at the camera. Medical bedding and a hospital setting are visible in the background, illustrating the realities of blood cancer treatment, hospitalization, and survivorship.

I just had my bone marrow transplant in May to beat my acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosis. My sister was a full genetic match, and I was so blessed to make it through; I currently have no detectable leukemia cells. I am still going through maintenance chemo, but things are going well. I received my diagnosis from my original cancer treatment that caused the AML. Originally I had bone cancer in my leg that had to be removed and a total knee replacement done. They found the cancer had spread to my lungs, which also had to be removed. At the same time, they also discovered thyroid cancer, which led to my thyroid being removed as well. From all the chemotherapy, I ended up with AML. My body may be full of scars and bruises, but I'm blessed to be alive today.
