Lillie, in remission, sitting in the back seat of a car

My name is Lillie, and I am a Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) survivor. I was diagnosed in 2010 at the age of 22. At the time, I was the mother to two young boys, ages 4 months and 2 years old. I was afraid and didn't know what would happen to me because all I have ever heard about cancer was that a lot of people don't make it. I kept my faith in God and continued to be strong for my children.

I received chemo treatments at Rush University and was given a stem cell transplant. I was so sick from the treatments that I wasn't even able to hold my baby; it was very depressing. I continued to work and keep busy as much as possible to keep my mind off reality. I have been in remission for nine years, and I am very grateful. I have had another child since then. She is 6 years old. I work full time and will be graduating in a few weeks.

I feel like everything happens for a reason, and although I didn't enjoy having cancer, I love being able to share my story and motivate others. I would like to tell anyone who is having doubts or feeling down, please don't give up and continue to push through. I know it is hard, but trust me, it is worth the fight. I would like to thank my family and friends for always being there for me, and I can't wait to participate in this year’s Light The Night Walk.
