Dr. Peter van Galen is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he develops improved treatments for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and related blood disorders. His research focuses on how blood stem cells age and how AML develops and progresses. His laboratory identifies unique properties of leukemia cells, such as how they survive stress and produce new proteins—processes that may reveal new ways to selectively eliminate AML cells. His team has also developed technologies to track single cancer cells over the course of disease, including rare cells that remain after treatment. These studies can uncover proteins that may be targeted to eradicate persistent leukemia cells. In addition to his research, Dr. Van Galen is committed to creating a supportive lab environment and mentoring trainees, with the goal of advancing science and improving patient care.
