I am reaching out to share a story that is incredibly personal to my family. In August 2022, my husband, Danny, Sheriff's Police Officer, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Until then, he had been healthy, active, and strong. Cancer was something we never imagined would become part of our lives.
Almost overnight, everything changed. I became his caregiver, his advocate, and the person trying to hold our family together while navigating a medical journey we never imagined facing.
Through hospitalizations, chemotherapy, complications, and countless moments of uncertainty, I learned firsthand that cancer doesn't just affect the person diagnosed. It changes the lives of everyone who loves them.
Our children made sacrifices. We missed moments we could never get back. Our family had to adjust to a life filled with uncertainty, fear, and challenges we never anticipated.
Even today, I find it difficult to talk about everything we endured without becoming emotional. While I am incredibly grateful for where we are today, the memories of what our family experienced remain very much a part of me.
I began writing about our journey as a way to process everything that had happened. What started as a personal reflection eventually became my first memoir, which I am preparing to publish in October 2026.
Finishing the book brought me a sense of relief, but more importantly, it gave me a way to share the parts of a cancer journey that people don't always see, especially the sacrifices made by spouses, children, and caregivers.
My hope is that our experience might help another family feel less alone. I also want to encourage caregivers to ask questions, advocate for their loved ones, and recognize the importance of having a community of support.
Thank you for the important work you do for individuals and families affected by blood cancer.
