On October 29, 2023, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at the age of 24. Before cancer, I moved through life without a care in the world, living each day like tomorrow was guaranteed. That all changed in an instant.
AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white and red blood cells, leaving the body defenseless against infections. It’s the most common form of leukemia in adults. When I was first diagnosed, I was in complete disbelief — my world felt like it suddenly stopped. Treatment began immediately with an intense 40-day hospital stay for chemotherapy.
Thankfully, I was able to enjoy the holidays with my family, and I realized my life didn’t have to be put on hold. I’ve chosen to be intentional about finding joy in the little things and appreciating every moment. Cancer is not a brick wall — it’s a bump in the road.
Recently, I received the news that my leukemia has returned. While it wasn’t what we hoped for, my spirits remain high. My incredible care team already has a new treatment plan in place, and this time, I’ll be continuing care as an outpatient, with no hospital stay needed.
I hope to become someone others can turn to for support and advice. Over the past several months, I’ve gained so much knowledge about AML and other forms of #BloodCancer. I’m ready to share what I’ve learned and bring you all along on this journey because it’s far from over.
