Smita Bhatia, M.D., M.P.H., is focused on cancer survivorship and quality of life. She studies the mechanisms underlying long term and late effects resulting from cancer treatment, in particular bone marrow transplantation, and is interested in development measures to significantly reduce or prevent these toxicities. Her team is following survivors of bone marrow transplant over the long-term to see what kinds of side effects develop over time. They are also studying the DNA from these patients to try to understand if there is a particular genetic makeup that might indicate greater risk of complications for certain subsets of patients. She currently holds an LLS Translational Research Program grant, and has been funded in various capacities for more than 15 years by LLS.
