I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) in October 2019. I saw a nephrologist, and he first thought I had kidney disease and took many vials of blood and a urine test. He noticed protein in my urine, and I thought nothing of it. I received a call from him two days later, and he informed me I had blood cancer. I was immediately referred by my PCP, Dr. Pamela Beck, to Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was diagnosed with MM at the age of 50. Within two weeks, I had started my first treatment plan. I had a stem cell harvest, but was lucky enough not to need a stem cell transplant. I was referred to the Blood Cancer United for financial help. Blood Cancer United was and still is a godsend to me. I called them, and the staff there was insightful, helpful, and compassionate in every way. I have received their help, guidance, and expertise in so many aspects of having this awful disease. Blood Cancer United made this experience easier to live with, knowing they are just a phone call away. Now, six years later and transplant-free, I am in a good place in my life and enjoying every minute. The impact Blood Cancer United has had on me has made me aware of how much this organization is truly needed in our community. I choose to volunteer here in many ways to give back just a little as they have given to me over the years. I may have cancer, but it doesn't have me.
