Blood Cancer United Statement on New NCI Head, Dr. Anthony Letai

Washington, D.C., September 30, 2025—Blood Cancer United®, formerly The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, applauds the choice of Dr. Anthony Letai to lead the National Cancer Institute. As a blood cancer researcher and physician, Dr. Letai will bring unique expertise to the critical work of N.C.I.—conducting and supporting cancer research.

“As a blood cancer expert, Dr. Letai knows how vital N.C.I. research funding is for our patients,” says E. Anders Kolb, M.D., Blood Cancer United President and CEO. “There are no screening tests and no known ways to reduce the risk of blood cancer. The only way to improve patients' survival rates and quality of life is by funding research into better treatments.”

As the single largest nonprofit funder of blood cancer research, Blood Cancer United looks forward to continuing its role in supporting and accelerating innovative scientific discovery that has the power to save and extend the lives of patients with every type of blood cancer.
