WASHINGTON, May 5, 2026 — Blood Cancer United® has received a special, one-time $25,000 grant from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expand its use of generative artificial intelligence within the Beat AML® Master Clinical Trial, the first collaborative precision‑medicine master clinical trial in a blood cancer.
The grant will support Blood Cancer United’s collaboration with Narrativa, an artificial intelligence company serving the life sciences industry, to automate key components of documentation required for regulatory review and oversight. Using Narrativa’s proprietary generative AI platform hosted in a secure AWS environment, the initiative will automate the development of patient narratives, tables, listings and figures (TLFs), and clinical study reports.
Launched in 2016, Beat AML was designed to change how acute myeloid leukemia is treated by using rapid genomic testing--completed within seven days of diagnosis--to match patients with targeted therapies based on their individual genetic mutations. Under a single master protocol, Beat AML evaluates multiple treatments across parallel sub‑studies, and has demonstrated that this precision medicine approach is feasible, safe, and leads to superior outcomes for older AML patients compared to standard chemotherapy.
To date, more than 1,900 patients have received genomic testing through Beat AML, and more than 650 have enrolled in one of its sub‑studies at clinical sites across the United States.
“Clinical trials generate enormous volumes of data, and transforming that data into accurate, compliant regulatory documentation is both essential and time‑intensive,” said Jennifer Bittinger, president of Narrativa. “By using generative AI to accelerate these processes, we are increasing confidence in AI-supported medical writing and enabling clinical research teams to accelerate their work to improve patient lives.”
A recent pilot within a Beat AML sub‑study showed that AI‑driven automation significantly reduced the time and cost by 65% and 40%, respectively, required to produce critical regulatory materials, while maintaining high levels of accuracy and oversight. The AWS grant will allow Blood Cancer United to expand this approach across multiple Beat AML sub‑studies.
“At AWS, we're continually amazed by the nonprofit sector's innovative spirit and dedication to creating positive change in our communities and around the globe," said Rick Buettner, Managing Director of Global Nonprofits at AWS. "Through the Imagine Grant program, we're seeing organizations embrace cloud technology in ways that fundamentally reshape how they deliver on their missions. From scaling their impact to reaching underserved communities, these nonprofits are showing us what's possible when vision meets innovation. We're proud to support their transformative work and help them build solutions that will benefit communities for years to come."
“Beat AML is changing the paradigm for how this aggressive and deadly leukemia is treated,” said Lore Gruenbaum, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of Blood Cancer United. “By responsibly applying generative AI, we can accelerate key steps in the conduct of clinical trials and ultimately help more patients access promising therapies sooner."
In addition to supporting Beat AML, Blood Cancer United plans to extend generative AI capabilities to additional mission-critical areas, including research grant management and impact assessment. This work advances Blood Cancer United’s Bold Goal to help blood cancer patients gain more than one million additional years of life by 2040 by ensuring that research moves faster and more efficiently.
About Blood Cancer United® and the Beat AML® Master Clinical Trial
Blood Cancer United (formerly The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) is the largest global nonprofit focused on blood cancer patient support, research, and advocacy. The organization's mission is to cure blood cancer and improve the quality of life of all patients and their families. To achieve it, Blood Cancer United brings together a community of people—patients and their families, volunteers, healthcare providers, scientists, staff, partners, fundraisers, and philanthropists—who believe all blood cancer patients deserve longer, fuller lives. The Beat AML® Master Clinical Trial (NCT03013998), launched in 2016 by Blood Cancer United, is the first collaborative precision medicine clinical trial in a blood cancer. The trial uses advanced genomic technology to match patients to the most promising targeted treatment based on their unique genetic mutations. The trial tests multiple therapies in multiple sub-studies simultaneously and has demonstrated that waiting for the results from rapid genetic profiling is safe and effective for older, newly diagnosed patients. Over the past decade, Beat AML has grown into a powerful collaboration of pharma companies, genetic testing experts, data specialists, regulatory agencies, and other industry partners working toward better and safer treatments for patients with AML.
