Some patients initially have no symptoms of MDS, and low blood cell counts from a routine blood test may be the earliest signs of the disease. For patients with symptoms, it is common not to feel well because of the lack of normal, healthy blood cells.
Signs and symptoms of MDS
Some symptoms of MDS are:
- Extreme tiredness
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath
- Headaches
- Pale skin
- Frequent infections
- Fever
- Bruising easily
- Frequent and/or severe bleeding
- Pinhead-sized red spots on the skin (petechiae)
Many symptoms of MDS are the same as other illnesses. Most people with symptoms of MDS do not have MDS but may have another disease or condition so it is important to get tested for an accurate diagnosis.
