Types of blood cancer treatment for children and teens

Chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and radiation therapy are common blood cancer treatments, but disease type and risk factors also determine the type of treatment you receive.

Factors that determine types of treatment

Factors that will determine your child’s treatment regimen may include:

Treatment type factors
  • The type of blood cancer
  • Rate of disease progression
  • Disease subtype, phase, category, and/or stage
  • Whether your child had cancer in the past and subsequent chemotherapy to treat it
  • Cytogenetic analysis results
  • Whether your child had another blood cancer in the past
  • Age and overall health
  • Whether the cancer is in your child's central nervous system
  • Symptoms
  • Whether your child has an infection in their bloodstream (systemic infection)
  • White cell count
  • Whether you're pregnant
  • The cancer cells' location
  • The effect that treatment may have on quality of life

Types of treatment

After considering the above factors, your child’s doctor will recommend one or more of the following treatments:
