In the 1990’s, I was diagnosed with benign monoclonal gammopathy. In April 2013, I was experiencing severe back pain that lead me to the ER. The results of the x-rays lead me to seek medical treatment from a hematologist/oncologist. The bone marrow biopsy result confirmed multiple myeloma.
My chemotherapy was very aggressive Revlimid 25mg (21 days and off 7 days) and Dexamethasone 4 mg (5 tabs a week). Another drug, Velcade, was started and a severe allergy developed. The side effects left me with breathing problems, severe fatigue, loss of appetite, weakened immune system, and gastrointestinal bleeds. In addition, I suffered from neuropathy. As a result, I had many hospitalizations.
Now, I’m off chemotherapy and feeling healthier and stronger. The help and love of family and friends, changes to my diet, prayer, and a positive state of mind have brought me through the tough times dealing with multiple myeloma.
