I am 80 years old and just learned that I have had polycythemia vera (PV) for years. My RBC, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels are high and have been for years, but my doctors never discussed that with me. I know that I am old, but I have been feeling fatigued, light-headed, and short of breath.
For some time, I have been feeling apathetic. I want to do many things, but I don't seem to be able to make myself. Except for low-dose aspirin, I am not currently being treated for PV. I take medication for asthma, hypertension, cholesterol, hormone replacement, and anxiety. I wonder why none of my doctors ever addressed PV. Without treatment, I wonder if my condition will become more serious, or am I okay? I feel that my age has a lot to do with how I am treated, or I should say not treated.
