Precision medicine is an emerging approach for prediction of disease risk and disease treatment afforded by the delivery of more precise and efficient care. This approach combines traditional methods with genetic and genomic information for a more personalized approach to disease management. This video will help clinicians become familiar with foundational genomic information to take part in the integration of biomarker testing for precise diagnosis, assessing targeted therapeutic options, and avoidance of adverse reactions when treating patients with blood cancer.

Staying Connected®: Facilitating the Learning Experience During & After Cancer Treatment

Online course for school personnel and healthcare providers who support students who have survived or are being treated for any type of cancer. Interactive modules focus on treatment and side effects, education, and psychosocial challenges, coping with grief, and provide strategies and resources for professionals and the children and young adults they serve. 

This free 6.5 hour online continuing education (CE) course is designed to be completed at a time that is convenient to you – following registration, you will have up to 16 weeks to complete the course in its entirety and receive CE credit or up to 3 weeks for the non-accredited track.

An email confirmation and course access information will be sent to you within 30 minutes of your registration.

The Blood Cancer United Scholarship for Blood Cancer Survivors awards up to $7,500 towards tuition for virtual or in-person vocational, two- or four-year undergraduate education.

School nurses, social workers, teachers, school counselors and other school and college personnel. Parents are welcome.

Goal

To educate school and college personnel on the effects of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer treatment to improve the learning experience during and after cancer treatment.

Learning Objectives 

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify cancers that affect children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs)    
  • Identify side effects, long-term and late effects of childhood/AYA cancer treatment
  • Describe challenges for survivors throughout their education
  • Explain laws that protect childhood/AYA cancer survivors’ rights
  • Develop strategies to help meet the students’ short- and long-term education needs
  • Discuss how to prepare the student body and faculty when a student is undergoing cancer treatment
  • Explain how to prepare students and faculty for the impending death of a student  
  • List strategies to support healing for students and faculty prior to and after the death of a student  
  • Access resources that support schools and families, including those from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Staying Connected® Modules 1 – 4: Medical, Psychosocial, Education

  • Registered Nursing Credit Designation 
    Approval for nurses has been obtained by the National Office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society under Provider Number CEP 5832 to award 5.5 continuing education contact hours through the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Social Work Credit Designation
    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Provider Number 1105, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) course. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 12/10/2023-12/10/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 5.5 clinical continuing education credits.

    LLS is recognized by the New York State Education Departments State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW- 0117. LLS maintains responsibility for the course. Social workers will receive 5.5 clinical CE contact hours for this activity.
  • Education 
    Teachers, school counselors, and other school and college personnel will receive a Certificate of Completion to submit to their local professional development approval committee.  Prior approval for acceptance of this training may be required.

Managing AML in Community Clinics
Join Elissa Baldwin from the LLS Patient Education team as she visits with Dr. Luke Fletcher from Willamette Valley Cancer Institute in Eugene, OR. In this episode, Dr. Fletcher discusses how acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is treated in a community oncology clinic, highlighting the importance of local care for patients who may not live close to major cancer centers. He also shares insights into the latest treatment advances, including menin inhibitors and novel combination therapies that are shaping the future of AML care.

For patients with other blood cancers living in rural or underserved areas, tune in at timestamps 10:18 and 18:11 to learn more about oncology care in the community setting and how local clinics coordinate with larger cancer centers to support comprehensive treatment.
